Jewish Life & Learning: Recollections

What is the Recollections project?

Recollections is a positive Jewish memory project that collects the stories of Kansas City's Jewish seniors and shares them with the community.

More Details, Please!

Recollections is an engagement, educational and videographic initiative of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City   (JCC) designed to capture the compelling emotional force and wisdom of Jewish elders.  The program aims to inspire Jews to explore their heritage by participating in the program as a volunteer, interviewer or interviewee.  The finished project is a DVD that will be cherished from generation to generation.  It also creates a local archive that identifies and traces the stories of Kansas City's Jewish elders.  The project can serve to motivate our community to carry on the treasures of Jewish stories and values.

How Does It Work?

Interviews focus on memories related to Jewish practice, community and values, and recollections of the JCC.  Interviews last 30-45 minutes and are conducted by a senior from our Jewish community.  They are held at the JCC or, if it is more convenient, the interviewee's home.  The interview is video and audio recorded and a copy of the DVD is made available to the interviewee and their family.  Additional copies are available for the Jewish Community Archives (held at UMKC) and the JCC.

Who Can Participate?

Interviews focus on memories related to Jewish practice, community and values, and recollections of the JCC.  Interviews last 30-45 minutes and are conducted by a senior from our Jewish community.  They are held at the JCC or, if it is more convenient, the interviewee's home.  The interview is video and audio recorded and a copy of the DVD is made available to the interviewee and their family.  Additional copies are available for the Jewish Community Archives (held at UMKC) and the JCC.

Interviewees:

Seniors willing to talk about their positive Jewish memories and recollections of the JCC.

Interviewers:

Seniors who believe in the importance of collecting oral memories/histories for the Jewish community.  Interviewers should be comfortable using a video camera after instruction and have a flexible schedule that enables them to dedicate 1-2 hours weekly to conducting interviews.  Volunteers will attend a Recollection Team meeting once a month.
